Abstract

Malaria remains a public health problem in endemic areas of Papua, thus strengthening health literacy based on local wisdom through the use of traditional medicinal plants is needed. This community engagement activity aimed to increase the knowledge of malaria cadres regarding the utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) as complementary therapy. The program was conducted in Koya Barat Village, Jayapura City, involving 30 malaria cadres. The methods included educational lectures, interactive discussions, and demonstrations of medicinal plant processing based on ethnobotanical mapping and lecturer research. The results showed an improvement in participants’ understanding that TOGA does not replace medical therapy but serves as a supportive measure for symptom relief through its secondary metabolite content. The plants introduced included turmeric, temulawak, meniran, sambiloto, brotowali, papaya leaves, citronella, beluntas, cat’s whiskers, ciplukan, and African leaves. In conclusion, TOGA education was effective in improving health literacy among malaria cadres and encouraging appropriate use of traditional plants in endemic areas.
